Cute cowgirl

I just love this smiling face, a cute cowgirl having the time of her life! Thanks to all the parents and grandparents who have let me try to draw and paint their kids! It seems to be a slow learning curve but I'm having fun with it.

Another pastel face

I have had two late nights at work...good thing I have a couple more pictures to post. I need to get back on that daily painting track.....thankfully I have the next week off!

Day two, Don Tiller class

I loved this class and would love to take it again...and again.....

This is from a photo of my friend Joyce's barn and cabbage garden. I've looked at this photo for months trying to get the nerve up to do it..... I thought Joyce might be insulted by the white sheep since she raises black sheep...but it worked so much better for the composition!

Back to daily painting...

eventually! This morning I took 10 glass faces to the gallery. I heard later that the clients were happy with the 8 they chose, and two more are at the gallery waiting for a new home. In theory I should be getting back to painting...except this is also the first day of a five week online class with Misty Mawn. Her work is fabulous and her classes are packed with lots of information and assignments....I'm not sure I'll be able to to keep up, what with having to work and all!! But for today, the first painting from Don Tiller's class....

Day two of Don Tiller's workshop

And I'm posting more glass faces! But I am so pleased they worked out, so I'll be able to offer the people wanting 8 faces a choice among 10....and I hope what they don't want will stay at Liberty Bay Gallery...but those paintings from the class are in a queue to be posted.....You'll know them when you see them! By the way, these are all about the same size, around 4" square....but because of the way I took the pics they don't look that way....

A whole day of painting

This was the first of my two day workshop with Don Tiller at Winslow Art Center. It's a fabulous class and I'm so glad I get to take it. However, tonight I'm posting the 5 glass faces I took out of the kiln this morning.....they are for a commission of 8 through Liberty Bay Gallery and I am kind of excited about this--my first commissioned work. I wanted to have a couple extra so the couple could pick the ones they like I have 3 more in the kiln (and an additional two that I've already posted). I'm hoping the ones in the kiln all work out so they will indeed have a choice.

Gotta love Fridays!

My second Friday of the week...since I'm off on Fridays Thursday nights always have that celebratory feel. I spent most of the day working on glass faces...if things go well I can deliver them on Monday or Tuesday and return to my daily painting. Which is good since I am almost out of painted ahead ones! I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel with this self portrait. Janet always tells me to smile when I do self portraits but I'm usually concentrating so much I have that intent frown.  I kind of like that crone like look I have but my husband says it doesn't look like me....yet!

It's my Friday, and I feel like I've earned it. I have to work on glass faces for the commission, and then two days of painting workshop through Winslow Art Center....they have some great workshops and I'm glad to be taking a two day class with Don Tiller. So for today....this is my favorite of Kaia so far, I think.

I had a dream...

Although it would be fun if this were really from a dream, it was really an experimental watercolor where I put color down and then tried to find recognizable things and define but I don't love it! I'll probably try it again in the future...

glass faces for a change

This is my current artistic expression.....I'm aiming to get at least 10 of them done so the buyers will have some choice in what they want....but we'll see. Here are the three I fired last night...

This daily painting blog interrupted!

The owner of the gallery where I have my glass faces was approached by a couple who are in town for a few weeks. They want to buy 8 small glass faces that they can use as coasters in their home....where they have a bright yellow couch. So I am nose to the grindstone for the next couple of days (after work!) to see how many I can get done before they leave....

Good thing I painted a few ahead last weekend....a friend suggested maybe I'm making this daily painting thing too hard, that watercolor studies and sketches should count, too. So this was the first watercolor sketch I did after talking to her. I need to learn to look at my work through the process instead of waiting until I get to the end and realizing the glasses are wonky!

After awhile I've got to leave this little face alone!!

Still didn't quite capture his likeness, and I think I'll just have to move on. By the time I master this look I'll be way out of date because he is turning more and more into a little boy every day! No more baby face for this guy!

I did this little watercolor face yesterday....cute enough, but still not the likeness I'm trying for....

Another pastel

Why not just put the other one out there....this was another try of Reggie, the puppy of Shauna's roommate. Still not a great likeness but I kind of like the hound dog look of this one....

My friend, Barb, came over today to make bread. We painted in between the cycles of bread making and only got one painting a piece done...but it was fun to spend the day doing something besides painting!

Pastel face

Well. I'm not sure why I decided to try pastels when I got frustrated with painting! Not knowing a thing about them whether I should fill the little holes in the textured pastel paper (the answer is no!)....that they should be layered for color...and that you blend them with another pastel rather than your finger....or a foam make up brush kind of thing....I realized when I finished this that I quit paying attention to the picture at some point because I ended up drawing the face straight on, when it was actually turned to the left a little. Oh, well, it was fun....and I may try it again...

Well, I had a 24 hour flu bug that kind of put the skids on any art work yesterday. (I'm not sure if that's a very good idea, combining 24 hour flu and skidding in the same thought.) the magic of television I have a painting I finished earlier.....along the same spring awakening vein....I think we're forgetting that spring, just like anyone else who's been around for a long time, really needs her beauty sleep. It may not be a good thing to wake her before she's ready....

Reggie, maybe

One of the fun parts of my trip to Spokane weekend before last was meeting Reggie, the puppy of one of Shauna's roommates. I've been on a roll with dogs lately.....but this dog unfortunately does not much resemble Reggie the puppy....maybe Reggie as he will be one day. Or maybe just a dog....I can say for sure he looks like a dog....

Daily painting.....

Meh!! Not having painting success today so I switched to pastels! Wait, does this make sense? Not much!! I should just read a book.....but I feel so compelled to get something done when I have the time....I can see this could be a burn out proposition.....but for now, at least, I have something to post....this is another watercolor face, done when working on some ATCs for Diana Trout's watercolor and mixed media class.....I need to go back to playing...that was fun!

Still not him!

I continue to try to capture this little face. This one is cute, but not as cute as the original!!

I have to wear shades

I love photos of faces with definite areas of light and shadows. So when I saw this one on Facebook I had to try it. But I could never pull off the shadow just looked kind of muddy and weird. I couldn't give up on it, I just kept working on it...which is not a good thing with watercolor....I don't know why, but I put a piece of Washi tape over the eyes and liked it better, so hurriedly made some Washi tape shades.....and now I like it!

Still painting turkeys

A couple of people at work today commented on how my painting is getting better. While I do appreciate that, I know that it's always the next one that could be a stinker. This one is a case in point. While by itself it's maybe not so bad, if you knew the original inspiration you would see all the ways it doesn't work! But it's all I have left to post until I do some more this I offer this as proof to Debi H. that I can still paint turkeys!

PS. I'm working on a bigger one of this...maybe IT will turn out!

I'm almost at the end of my painted ahead paintings! I have some ideas and thankfully tomorrow is my Friday so I hope I have more paintings to share soon....meanwhile this is another charcoal of Kaia, that beautiful granddaughter of a work colleague. She is such a cutie and I hope it shows in this!

She just wouldn't give up

This face has been through several transformations.....first she was acrylic, very youthful looking. With my increasing age I'm getting more interested in faces that tell stories, so I made her more crone like.....then continued working on it, trying to get the skin tones more even. Then used baby wipes and wiped her almost all the way back to the beginning...but those eyes continued to be prominent and soulful.....tried some pastel (I don't do pastel), then tried washing it off! At one point it looked like she was crying so I put her away until tonight and tried to resurrect her. I guess I'm stopping here.....she seems okay about it.

Playing catch up

This will be a hard week for daily painting! Today was my last day off and I spent it out of sorts until about 1 when I took a nap---for an hour and a half!!! That hardly ever happens! Catching up from two nights of not very good motel sleeping, I guess....but I finally got started on something tonight....and maybe it won't be too hard to finish up. Meanwhile, here's one of my paintings ahead from last week...

I work in a Navy town and this woman may have been one of the supporting services used by Navy guys---I don't know for sure. But I do know her appearance stuck with me until I could get home and sketch....I didn't do the whole girl, complete with ripped jeans and lace stockings under the jeans....I was taken by her big eyes and long curly hair hanging out of her hoodie....

Back home

What a fun weekend, with Shauna in Spokane. I got behind in posting on this blog but oh, well....daily painting really means painting frequently. And I haven't done any since last weekend....but here's one I intended to post yesterday. My sister, Barbara, does pet rescue. This is one of her rescues that she's trying to place....the picture looks better in person and Missy looks even better in person. She's a great dog!
