Losing control...

in a controlled kind of way. I did Diana Trout's exercise with India ink, dropped, drawn, and blown around with a straw. I did it on a large sheet of watercolor paper and once the ink was dry I added glazes of acrylic paint....then I cut it into 5 cards, postcard size for another project I'm doing. The idea was to just lose control, paint with your eyes closed, etc., but I saw a cat in one of the cards and I had to let it out.....

Emberly's sunset

My niece, Emberly Ballew, loves photography. And I love that from time to time she'll send me a picture thinking I'd like to paint it! This time she sent me a series of 3 photos of a Central Texas sunset. We both agreed the last one was our favorite so that's the one I painted....of course, I did not paint it exactly! Instead it was inspired by her photo:

The painting:

I guess I just love color! But Emberly said she really likes it so I'll send it to her when it's dry.

Art Journal composite

Today I pulled a card from Orly Avineri's The Art Journal game. It was about using text and number in creating a journal page. I combined it with the Creative Jumpstart's emphasis on Picasso this week, and this was the result!

Satsumas again

Bill keeps buying tangerines and that's fine with me. I like their flavor, but I love how they look piled up in a bowl on top of the blue placemat! Just can't get enough of that orange and blue....

Catch up

I have painted some other stuff but posted it directly to Facebook rather than blogging. Here are a couple of things I've done in the last several days.

Today I finished this  oil painting that I started with an underpainting of acrylics. I think it's finished---it's too wet for me to do anything else to it right now anyway, but I think it's done.

I also had some paint left over and have been reading about the Wet Paint weekly workouts....this is not a self portrait it but is Fauvist-like.

And working backwards to Friday and yesterday...I watched Diana Trout's video on losing control, so used that technique with India ink, then went back with some acrylics and then with pen and more India ink....I was also thinking about personal symbols, since I'm not clear what mine are...there are a few in here:

And besides all that, I have the loom warped again for a second scarf on dummy warp...but I do seem to consistently be the dummy and this is going to be another short scarf! It reminds me, though, of how much I like to weave with wool.

And my second to last painting from the break...

I should have posted this before the black eyed peas....

A bowl of luck for the new year

I squeezed out one more painting from my holiday break! It's kind of sketchy--does it read as a bowl of black eyed peas with jalapenos?

Iconic Haystack

Probably not a good idea to paint an iconic landmark that's been painted over and over, like Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach....but I love Cannon Beach unabashedly and I did this one for me!
